The Medical Council registers doctors in New Zealand and carries responsibilities in the areas of standards, conduct and competence.

The Council's main purpose is to promote and protect public health and safety in New Zealand.

They are governed by a Council and their funding comes from the registration and practising fees paid by all practising doctors in New Zealand.
